I understand it's a hard one, but in the absence of a truly great season from anyone, I think it has to go to Venus for Wimbledon and the YEC. Frankly, this was a great year on the WTA, in my opinion, and I'm looking forward to more intrigue in 2009.
Correction: "...this WASN'T a great year on the WTA..."
I haven't made up my mind, but I will.
It's between Serena and Venus.
I'm a biased Serena fan, so most will take it with a grain of salt. The facts can't be refuted though. Serena won tournaments throughout the year and had a nice little match streak. She was in a slam final and won a slam. She won on clay as well, albeit not red clay - but still clay nonetheless. She regained the #1 ranking after an unprecedented 5 years? (I think) I don't see how repeating Miami, winning in Charleston on green clay, Bangalore and winning the USO without dropping a set is less than anything ANYONE has done on tour this year.
True, the WTA has been in a shambles with the rankings, but Serena has had her best year since 2002 or 2003 and it would be a shame if it goes unnoticed because people performed well at the end of the year. 44-8, when was the last time Serena played more than 50 matches in a year?
I usually like Bonnie but methinks she protests too much.
Playing fewer matches (a lot for her but not anywhere near the number Jelena played) Serena ended the year at number two. If Jelena had played a saner schedule would she have ended the year at the top? There was a dominant player this year in the WTA and her name is Serena Williams.
Just so no one gets confused I'm a dyed in the wool Venus fan.
Serena, of course!
