Survivor

She squandered a 5-0 first-set lead. Serena Williams must have gotten all she could handle from Jie Zheng because by the middle of the second set, Serena was winning more points on her second serve than her first and a mere 52% of service points overall.

I'd like to have seen the how of it. How Zheng was pressuring Serena's first serves. How Serena was double faulting so much. How she recovered. How Zheng capitulated.

But, alas, there was no television coverage.

Which means I also didn't get to see Caroline Wozniacki upset No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva.

Oh, to be a player in the bottom half of the draw. If former champ Svetlana Kuznetsova can't find her way to the final then she might want to consider a different career.

Seriouly, I cant darn believe you guys in the US of A cant get to see this games, in 2009.

It just so beggars belief!

I wish I had a direct line to someone in the WTA.

I saw all of the first, then the coverage stopped in the middle of the second set.

Honestly, Serena tightened up for some reason and Zheng has great anticipation. She made her work, she was smacking those 2nd serve returns at one point.

Anyway, it's on right now on TTC - although there is live tennis being played.

You're all so lucky you have a tennis channel!! Down here in Sydney we ONLY get the Aussie tourneys on TV... And limited telecasts of the other slams. Boo =(

Why Kuznetsova? Based on recent form Azarenka is the favorite...

I agree. I'm a massive fan of Azarenka! She worked hard on the off season and is slowly and steadily developing her all-court game. She ripped it up in Brisbane and I feel she'll definitely make the Bali Tourney of Champions if not the SEC...
I don't think she'll make the same mistake here that she did in Indian Wells...
What are your thoughts?

Sveta has more game than Azarenka. She's also beaten Azarenka 3 times, including at this event last year with a bagel in the third set. Sveta needs to find a way to make the final. She's won this thing before and she has more experience in the latter stages of the big events.

Go Sveta!

It's strange... I just get this feeling about Azarenka - that excited feeling that she's about to break through. I had the same feeling a couple of years ago when Jankovic made her first Slam semi at the US Open when she tore through the draw.

I think the match with Sveta could be Azarenka's breakthrough. She was playing fiercely against Serena in Melbourne before she retired with the dizzies. I truly think this may be her year.

I had always scoffed at the idea of Azarenka breaking through after perusing her results over the past couple of years, and thought she'd be a top 20 player at best (noting those consecutive losses to the emotionally fragile Sveta as an example) - all matches she should have won if she was going to become a top 10 player.

It will be so interesting to see how this match goes on Thursday... =)

Matt, I'm not saying Azarenka won't win the match. I'm simply saying that Sveta needs to win the match. As a friend said, she can play, she's got the game to win big on every surface, she just chooses not to. She'll always have her demons, but she's got to find a way to slay them in time to win a few more Slams.

I'm with you there Craig. It would be awesome to see Sveta win again. I'm a really big fan of her personality and I hope she can overcome her demons to claim some more big wins.

I'm just a sucker for the up-and-comer as it's the most excitement I'm getting from the women's game at the moment, sadly...

I used to be a massive, massive fan of women's tennis (in the Seles --> Capriati --> Myskina days) but my interest has definitely tapered in recent years.

Yeah, Matt. I'm for Serena and Amelie and that's about it. I want someone like Kuzzy to get it together, but I'm not a fan.
