sportsmanship award.... was it for the weak retraction of her wimbledon grumbling and nastiness

I've never liked ElenaD's personality much. I don't understand why she's considered such a great sportswoman.

The players voted for her.

The personification of sportsmanship eh?: http://2008.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/interviews/2008-07-03/200807031215096418125.html

Q. If it is an all-Williams final, how do you see it?

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: I mean, if they're going to play against each other, I mean, I don't know what to say. I mean, I cannot imagine myself playing against someone from my family. It's really hard. For sure it's going to be a family decision.

Q. When you say it's a family decision, do you mean they're going to sit down and decide who the winner's going to be?

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I don't know how it's gonna be because. I mean, I have never faced that situation in my life so, I mean, it's really hard for me to say. But I just don't know.

Q. Why don't they just go out like two other players and let the best player win?

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, maybe it will be like that, yeah.

Yeah Elena, MAYBE you didn't understand English so well after you said it 7 or 8 years ago as well?

Sorry, I just can't bring myself to "like" her or look past the catty nature underneath the smile.

Pamela, it's funny that you brought up that interview. I don't recall it.

But I also know that you and I have concurred about what we saw in that final.

It's one thing for fans to suggest a player might not be able to knock out her sister (how many times have I had to hear that Big Sis couldn't bring herself to beat Lil Sis, but when the reverse is posited, eyes roll, but that's a whole other story and I ain't going there right now), it's quite another when a player does the same.

I am with the majority here - I have never liked her. I think she has the ugliest game on tour, apart from Dinara, she is an over-rated player in my estimation and she is like Kimmy - behind that smile lies the devil

Nice for Elena - I like her a lot. :)

She has always been popular among other players. Some exceptions of course, but who doesn't have those?

I like Elena...

Why isn't Serena in the picture?

It just goes to show you that as fans we're fed a steady stream of bits and pieces to paint a picture that may not convene with reality. Apparently the players feel Dementieva and Federer are the most sporting competitors on their tours.

Who are we to argue with them?

We are fans with our own opinions. If we all agreed, what fun would we have?
