Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal, Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic were nominated for the prestigious 2009 Laureus World Sports Awards.
Venus and Rafa were nominated as World Sportswoman and World Sportsman of the year. The Serbs were nominated in the category World Breakthrough of the Year for winning their first major titles.
The Laureus World Sports Awards are widely acknowledged as the premier honors for the international sporting calendar. Due to the global economic downturn, Laureus will not host a full-scale spring awards ceremony this year, choosing instead to honor the winners individually in a series of smaller events troughout May and June.

What about Serena?
She wasn't nominated.
Would love to see Rafa win this.
Me too tangerine. And I can't think of another male athlete who deserves it more.
Micheal Phelps will win it if he's not "punished" for smoking pot.
I hope not. To my mind, this is SO harmless, but I guess more conservative ppl may not see it that way. Of course, I come from the land of snowboard Olympic gold medalist Ross Rebagliata! How anyone could have thought marijuana is a PED, good thing they let him keep the medal.
Yet, I would be so thrilled if Rafa won this too.. he's amassed a pretty good crop of wins in the last 12 months. Gotta admit though, that what Phelps did was darn near impossible.
Heart says Rafa. (as if you didn't know, LOL)
