Roland Garros 2009 Day 6 Open Thread

Spanish fans attend the French Open tennis first round match opposing Brazilian player Franco Ferreiro to Spanish player Feliciano Lopez on May 25, 2009 at Roland Garros stadium in Paris. The event, the second Grand Slam tournament of 2009, runs from May 24 to June 7, 2009.

We've reached the third round where the matchups get even more interesting. We've already been treated to three classics so it can only get better from here.

All the matches on Chatrier should be dramatic, though I'm not sure why Miss Siberia is there instead of, say, Venus, who as the No. 3 seed, has yet to play a singles match on center court. Unless, of course, I missed it. Surely someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The Lenglen matches should also be tight. I'm looking forward to a particular upset sometime in the evening.

I see one other potential upset off the show courts. Tell us what you see.

I hope Andy Murray enjoyed the tournement because it is time for him to leave. If he tries to play with the nerves of Tipsarevic, he will only make him more dangerous.

If Safina decides to beat herself ala against Alize Cornet at the AO, Pavlyuchenkova will be present to seize the opportunity.

16 year old Portuguese kid Larcher De Brito is getting inside Rezai's (and my) head with her voice. This shriek is something else. Now Rezai replyed with a shriek. LOL

pompelmo, you had me at the first sentence.

I'm laughing coffee out of my nose.

Morning All. Boy de Brito's grunt is annoying to the extreme. It sounds like someone is killing my cat.

Morning all. Dang work will interfere with my tenniswatching again, sigh.

I hope to see Pinky advance, although his play as of yet hasn't been 'all that' - patchy is more like what I've seen. Everyone thinks Lleyton is a hasbeen, but still...

I agree, the Murray-Tipsy match could be real interesting. Same with the Spaniards Almagro and Verdasco.

Vamos, Matador!

oh my goodness, what is Dulko wearing. She looks like she has on a pair of men's underwear that fit too big, especially the back part. Her legs are way too skinny to be wearing that sort of skirt

It's early yet, but Pompelmo, I think you've provided me with my best laugh of the day. Your first sentence is gold!

Craig Hickman said...

Karen, Dulko is wearing the exact same thing Cibulkova is wearing.

Karen said...

What is going on with Venus this morning. She looks a bit out of sorts.

Karen said...

OMG did not realise that - LMAO. It fits Cibulkova better than it fits Dulko. Poor Venus. Come on girl

Craig - just tuned in a little ago..... Venus struggling against Szavay.... not surprising.... but 6-0 is.... and she's not coming forward and is hitting so many unforced errors! eek!

If you are referring to Azarenka-CSN - I have been expecting that and I would be surprised if Azarenka won

b said...

wow venus.....

gave the break back (in the wind)in and went down 6-0 6-4..... Horrible play.... great job by Szavay

So, was Venus injured or hampered? I only caught the last game of the 2nd set, but I recall her wearing a bandage on her knee last night in her doubles match.

Sorry Venus fans, that was rough.

Looks like Rafa is making quick work of Hewitt. The match statistics are very lopsided and Hewitt is not doing well. I'm not able to watch the match but the match statistics on the tracker say it all. Go Rafa. But part of me is sad for Hewitt.

Helen W said...

Beth well Rafa took it in straight sets. I think the match was closer than the score, and Rafa has definitely raised his level of play from his first two matches (as usual).

I felt a bit sad for Lleyton too. Did you know that he & Rafa played golf in Miami, and Lleyton thrashed him? I'm always charmed by stories of the players enjoying each other's company outside of tennis.

I really like Tipsarevic, or as I call him, Tipsy. He does have a tendency to wobble as he makes some shots, after all.

After he pushed Roger to five sets in the 2008 AO, I've always been a fan. Even after he beat a tight Andy Roddick at Wimbledon. But come on, the guy has "Beauty Will Save the World" tattooed on his forearm!

He's either great or awful, so it will be interesting to see who shows up against Murray.

Pamela said...

Simon lost. I was expecting that, he's been in awful form lately and I really get tired of watching him sometimes.

Rafa's match was a total snooze fest. I can't call Murray or Tispy. Tispy is so flakey to me, he often does not deliver when he should.

sG said...

I admit to being a bit surprised by his lost to Hanescu. Yes, coming into the French his form has been for ish, but he's played pretty well at the French. He displayed a lot of good fight against Odesnik and I believe his next match was a relative breeze. After those two matches I expected more of a fight in this one.

Matthew said...

Oh man, from 2-5 down, Murray's back even? After Tipsy had at least one set point? Dispiriting, that.

Matthew said...

And Tipsy breaks back to get the chance to serve for the set a THIRD time! This is pretty crazy. Wish I could be watching the match and not the score updates.

sG said...

Is no one picking up the match??? Tennis Channel TV is a bust, so is ESPN and TTC

sg - see if you canb see it ESPN 360.... may depend on your broadband carrier

===============

same here for Hewitt.

in the beginning he was that "annoying" guy - and that incident with Blake on blake's color was very low of hewitt.

but i've grown to like him over the years actually, not only for his fighting spirit and this continued dedication he has to keep trying "to take a crack at the big guys" (he said it yesterday) ...

i'd like him to also go out on a very good note in his career. he has generally been one of the players that really had real respect for the game, imo. giving it everything he has , and VERY capable of acknowledging his opponent's wins.

but let's remember this IS clay which is still his weakest surface and that was a match against a Clay Monster. ..who by the way clearly WASN'T taking Hewitt for granted.

Both hewitt and nadal have great respect and admiration for each other's style.

we were seeing two of the greatest fighters ever to come on the courts. but nadal today and at this point is just too big a gladiator for hewitt on clay.

POMPELNO predicated Murray's match PERFECTLY!!!

lol. what a line! hehe

tipsarevic actually turned murray's tactics against him , plus more. lol.

Graf_sampras said...

that was a tough 7-6 first set for murray though. lol

Matthew said...

Meanwhile, Ferrer is serving to stay in the match against Soderling.

Matthew said...

There have been eight breaks of serve in 14 games in the Murray-Tipsy match. That's kind of ridiculous.

sG said...

What! Tipsarevic retired?! Gift from god!!!

sG - he had a rather bad injury - it seemed the trainer was touching him very high up in both thighs ..where they meet the torso...so it might have been a real pulled muscle somewhere there..where i saw it onlin live free streaming (followed by sharapova screaming) -

his serve started to become weaker actually. funny thing is one commentator with an obvious French accent speaking in english was exclaiming , when he saw the trainer put his arms ALL THE WAY up inside tipsy's pants to his groin area...

:"WHAT? what's he DOING?! ....i know this is FRANCE....but ,,, in PUBLIC?"

lol.

And with that, Graf_Sampras, you supplied my second best laugh of the day. LOL

Too bad for Tipsy though I can't stand the guy. I reiterate: gift from god, Murray, gift from god.
