Ladies' Quarterfinals Day.

MadProfessah
is too busy teaching summer class to offer up one of his anticipated previews and predictions, but he did send me a note saying:

"I do think it's Serena in 3 over Azarenka, Venus in 2 over Aggie, Safina over Lisicki in 3 and Dementieva over Schiavone."

What say you?

CENTRE - SHOW COURT - 1.00 PM START

1. Dinara Safina (RUS) [1] 1 vs Sabine Lisicki (GER)
2. Victoria Azarenka (BLR) [8] vs Serena Williams (USA) [2]

COURT 1 - SHOW COURT - 1.00 PM START

1. Venus Williams (USA) [3] vs Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) [11]
2. Francesca Schiavone (ITA) vs Elena Dementieva (RUS) [4]

Azarenka, Lisicki, Venus, Schiavone.

That would be sensational.

Pamela said...

I really hope the shrieking umpire abuser Azarenka loses in straights. That also goes for Dinara and coach.

Matt said...

Lisicki, Venus, Dementieva, Serena

Craig Hickman said...

Lisicki's serve motion reminds me of Serena's. If a beautiful thing.

Craig Hickman said...

Lisicki choked. Safina fought.

Anybody surprised?

Matt said...

I can't stand Safina. There's just nothing I like about her at all. Nothing. Zilch. She has a bad temperament, can't serve... Just grinds her way through opponents who shouldn't even be on the pro circuit. Ugh she CAN'T make it to another Slam final.... PLEASE NO!

Craig Hickman said...

Have mercy. What a way for a set to end.

Both players totally collapsed.

Matt said...

C'mon!! Sabine takes the 1st set!! I'm glad she's serving 1st in the 2nd too...

Pamela said...

I'm barely able to watch, but as long as Lisicki wins - I'm good. I'm just completely turned off by Dinara lately. Really way off.

Craig Hickman said...

I used to be neutral-to-like toward Safina.

Now I just want her off the court. Her coach looks deranged, and it seems to have rubbed off on her.

pompelmo said...

Ms. Wimbledon easily reaches the semifinal.

pompelmo said...

I cannot stand the whole family. They make me feel uneasy with all their mood.

Matt said...

I just liked Safin to look at ;)

Craig Hickman said...

Lisicki is buying the the 7th game poison.

Just play the ball and win the points, lady.

charags said...

Safina doesn't look too good right now; not with that score and with that outfit. She definitely isn't behaving like the World #1 out on the center court.

Venus.. now she is something else :)

Craig Hickman said...

Lisicki isn't doing anything with her return of serve in this set.

Her legs have turned to lead.

Craig Hickman said...

And even though she just won that point, why target Safina's backhand?

b said...

Very happy for Venus - YAAAAY!!!!

Charags - Safina's outfit doesn't fit, which is not that unusual but this tournament it's accentuated b/c so many other women are wearing the same thing and it fits them and actually looks nice (albeit simple). Why can't Adidas fix her outfits?

I am rooting for Lisicki, and Serena and Schiavone - although I really dont get the Safina hate - although I do agree that her coach dependence is very annoying..... so is the noise she makes - it's not that loud, just annoying

Craig Hickman said...

Lisicki is just gagging now. If she would actually hit the ball, she'd be back on serve already.

I guess it will be up to Venus to put Safina out of her misery.

Pamela said...

I don't think it's "hate" directed towards Dinara. It's more of an annoyance and for me personally - I'm tired of seeing her game. It's basic and ugly to watch. The coach - no comment. Too many chokers in the WTA.

Craig Hickman said...

Why is it that whenever a player is criticized fairly it's considered hate?

Safina's overall game is pedestrian, her serve is abysmal, her mental frailty painful to watch, the noise she makes is grating.

These are things I, for one, can't stand to watch, really. There is no hate.

She's probably a sweet and likable young lady off the court, but we're watching her play tennis, not having a tea date.

Craig Hickman said...

You've got to give it to the Wimbledon fans. They sat through 2 and a half hours of painful tennis and they still stood up and applauded the players when the torture finally ended.

Tennis Vagabond said...

I DO like the way The Belly hits the crap out of the ball when she gets in her grooves. One case where I definitely agree with you Craig about the mental game being more important than anything else.

And Belly rolls on!

Pamela said...

Well said Craig. And on that note, if she can get away with 0 aces, 15 doubles,38 errors, meltdowns and STILL win ... sad. She's very sweet and personable off court. I like her in that regard, although I'm hoping Venus just mows her down and exposes all of her weaknesses. What we just saw was pathetic tennis.

Craig Hickman said...

Pamela, those stats are frightening.

How can the WTA feel good about its offering when the ranking world No. 1 puts on this kind of performance on Centre Court at Wimbledon?

Shaking my head.

Craig Hickman said...

I hope Serena clears up a few things for the pundits and some of the fans in this match.

dapxin said...

Serena up to some balls here.

Azarenka, 1st time knowing/seeing her, looks tasty too.

some matcth this looks already.

dapxin said...

yeah Craig,

the commentators here are spewing some idi0tic nonsense too

------------------

How do you suggest the WTA improves its offering then?

Craig Hickman said...

Matt, I have no clue.

It is what it is.

But the WTA can't feel good about itself with its ranking world No. 1 playing like a deer in headlights on the sport's biggest stages.

Craig Hickman said...

Serena's return game is exquisite.

dapxin said...

Serena's got scores to settle here.

Demolition mode Serena.hmmmmmm!

Karen said...

Talk about a woman on a mission - damn - people had to come and stand by my desk a moment ago - just awesome hitting

Tennis Vagabond said...

Just score watching today, and curious what folks here think: Is Venus now a bigger favourite than Rog?
The sub-question to that is, does Serena represent a bigger obstacle than Murray?

I'd have to bet on Venus first right now, but of course, she is one big step closer to the finals.

Serena's nerves are on display in the early goings of this second set.

::

The one thing I like about Azarenka are her frequent F-bombs.

Craig Hickman said...

There is no way Serena ought to have allowed Azarenka to hold serve in the last game, so I'm not surprised she's facing break points in this one. Her footwork has died.

charags said...

Just wondering, did Serena ever attend ballet classes? That half twirl she does on her toes is so cute :-)

dapxin said...

Serena! concentration loss?

Or just pedal off the gas ?

charags said...

More like Azarenka upping her game. 1-set down calls for drastic survival tactics.

Karen said...

that point just gave me goose bumps - man this Serena is so good

dapxin said...

I gotta say I am loving Azarenka now.

Her body language is promising - certainly looking better than that Safina cry baby.

I m gonna keep a tab on her now.

Serena, is however just on a roll here.

Beat me if you can. gr8 watch

b said...

did you see that last point at 4-3 - great!

Okay so maybe the word hate is too strong, sorry.... How about "I don't get the intense dislike of Safina and/or her game"..... the point being that I can see how people find her annoying but not so annoying to the point that they can't stand to watch her play - as so many people here have expressed.

dapxin said...

b,
I dont get your point.

But I am a Tennis noob and I think Safina wearing that No1 nonsense is just wrong...

Craig Hickman said...

I tried to tell y'all Azarenka couldn't touch Serena at this event.

Masterclass Performance Serena!

Good call by Mad Professah, all his picks won as expected.

b, I can't stand watching Safina play at this point. I put up with her primarily because of this blog. And then there's the car wreck factor.

Karen said...

good win by Serena - should eat up LenaD, but you never know - so funny, last year Venus played LenaD in the semis, this year Serena gets her. Nice to see Vika and Serena having a chat and a laugh while walking off court. This morning Aga walked off before Venus. She did the same thing last year when she lost to Serena in the 1/4s as well. Turns out she is a sore loser. Oh well.

Craig Hickman said...

charags, of course I'm biased, but I don't think Azarenka upped her game one iota. Serena's return game broke down in the early games of the second set and then she broke herself.

When she got over herself, she reeled off the last four games.

Pamela said...

"the first set was an exercise in brutality"

Quote that Craig. Quote that!!!!

Yes, quote that. lol

Craig Hickman said...

dapxin, you're hilarious.

I think the first set was an exercise in Fuck You.

I'll explain what I mean by that later.

Karen said...

@b, her tennis is just plain ugly. She looks like someone just took her off the street, put a racquet in her hand and told her to go play. She just looks like a complete mess on the court. Before she became so well known I have always said that she looks like she needs to take a shower. Every single athlete on the tour sweats, but I have never seen anyone who looks like they need a bath moreso than Dinara. Plus the sound she makes is just annoying.

Mad Professah said...

Thanks tangerine for noticing that I went four for four in the women's semis!

I called Serena to win the tournament (over Venus) before it began but I may be reassessing after the Venus-Safina match.

You wanna see "an exercise in brutality"? Watch the serena-elena semifinal on Thursday!

b said...

@ daxpin - I had posted earlier about Safina, using the word hate, several posters responded so that was me modifying my original post

@T Vag (or anyone else)- is "the Belly" Safina?

I think Craig is right about Azarenka not being willing to fight.... she gave up after she lost that last point.... I still think she has more tools than the sharapova types and could certainly win a slam at an event where all the strong players are knocked out early (e.g. men's RG 2009)
Personally I wasn't concerned about her beating Serena playing well but Serena playing badly and Azarenka seizing the opportunity

I'm glad this win was so decisive, to finally answer the questions..... even Azarenka stated in interview that Serena was injured in Miami so the win wasn't indicative of future success

oddman said...

Craig Hickman said: 'charags, of course I'm biased, but I don't think Azarenka upped her game one iota. Serena's return game broke down in the early games of the second set and then she broke herself.'

I just happened to switch on the telly at around that point of the match, and heard MCarillo talking about 'nice to see somebody believing in her own game (Azarenka)'... what I saw, with my unbiased and noncommital eye, was Serena looking a bit tentative at that point when she lost her serve. Not moving... for a biased eye, Craig, you don't do so bad.

dapxin said...

lols @ craig,

I like Azarenka here though. she seemed to belief, even if Serena was gonna be shot today b4 she loses to her. thats a good thing.

Pamela said...

Safina has that huge take back on her forehand, it's absolutely hideous. It's like she's trying to swat a fly in the air. I don't have an issue with her looks, although Adidas needs to make her longer shirts. She has a look of desperation and tension in her eyes and face at all times, especially when she's losing. It's really hard to watch her when she's like that.

She'll be near tears when she plays Venus and once again, we'll get the sob stories but she'll remain #1. It is what it is.

Hahaha - this is really really funny, and would, of course, explain the clothes.... thx for making my morning.....

i guess I will be the only Safina supporter here..... I do hope that Venus lays waste to her in the semi.... (That said, I did enjoy the (Rome?) match and was just annoyed at Venus for letting that slip away

Craig Hickman said...

Serena did exactly what I wished for her to do:

Deconstruct a few myths among almost all of the pundits and many of the fans about who Azarenka is as a tennis player, not a tennis star.

Azarenka hits the ball hard, squeals like a dying pigeon, and believes much of her hype. For many, that makes her Sharapova 2.0.

I don't buy it.

Her obvious talent and desire, along with her inexcusable temper and attitude (tough I do enjoy the F-bombs) when things aren't going her way, make her Vaidisova 2.0.

If Azarenka makes a Slam final, I'll be a little it more than surprised.

I like Azarenka's fight more than the other new ones. She at least looks like she tries.

Craig Hickman said...

vw, she definitely tries. But she fights herself way more than she fights her opponents and that will ultimately be her undoing.

She even said in her last interview that she's always going to be (over)emotional on the court.

I believe her.

But Karen -- Roger Federer is BEAUTY...we can not let a day go by without talking about his Beauty.....

even roger watches his matches because "they are so beautiful".

how can people forget so QUICKLY that just yesterday he played so beautifully?.......this is unacceptable.

wimbledon has committed a crime -- by not playing roger's matches on the big Screens during the Women's games.....that is not right!

Karen said...

@Graf, why dont you just change your moniker to RogerFedForEver. That would make more sense.
As to Azarenka, you are right Craig she does fight herself, but I think that comes about as a result of her wanting it so much. I tell you something though, if given the time to set up for her shots she is just lethal on that backhand. She hit some blazing winners today, but one of the things that make Serena so fabulous is her ability to take the ball so early so she does not give her opponent the time to set up for their favourite shots. I was thinking during one point why is she playing to Azarenka's backhand, but I realised that it was a strategy, in that she played to it until she moved the ball to Vika's forehand, and drew the error. I tell you I dont think I have ever seen Serena hit the ball so well for a long time. Not to mention Venus, she was just on fire yesterday in the first set of her match against Ana, and today she was just unstoppable. Man, these girls make the rest of the women look really bad.
