Viktor Troicki (R) of Serbia works with his trainer ahead of the U.S. Open tennis championship in New York August 30, 2009.
::
Let the games begin.
Arthur Ashe Stadium will features Kim Clijsters, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Andy Roddick in their first-round matches, while Louis Armstrong showcases Victoria Azarenka, John Isner, Amélie Mauresmo, James Blake, and Meghann Shaughnessy. Donald Young (remember him?) returns to action on Court 7 against Tommy Robredo.
I don't see any upsets on the schedule for today. Do you?

Would Isner winning over Hanescu (28) be an upset? Barely. But I think he can do it. Youzhny likewise I'd take over Matthieu, but it's a slim upset there too.
Sam Stosur had to dig in to win, avoiding the upset. Nice to see Clijsers back.
Somehow, if Isner defeats Hanescu, I won't consider it an upset, though technically it would be.
Yeah, I agree. Seeds over about 25 losing is often not much of an upset.
Donald Young has taken the second set to level the match against Robredo. He could pull that off- keep believing Donald!
And Isner is up 2 sets to love after a 30-point tiebreak!
BG: 'Roger deserves a soft quarter...'
Yeah, I heard that one too, Craig.
Good to see the ladies come through with such strong wins. Other than Serena, the other 2 top-10 ladies served a bagel, and Azarenka dropped only 2 games, as did Kimmie.
Interestingly, not so with the men; almost all of them had to fight off last set action from opponents. Surprised to see Soderling's yo-yo scoreline.
Btw, I ask at the risk of sounding totally ignorant: how come Federer played today; don't the top somethings get a Bye in R1 ?
Happy games everyone :-)
Just remembered; no BYEs in Grand Slams :-D
Charags, there are no byes in Slams unless someone withdraws from the tournament after first-round play begins.
USO plays men's first-round matches over three days. I believe it's the only Slam that does such a thing.
Yeah, kinda tough that Rafa has to wait until Wednesday to play his first round match. Let's at least hope it's a day match.
oddman, I suspect it will be a night match.
people,
Is Venus going back to Florida soon?
Dushineva is getting @ her :(
Vera D won't win this match, even if she gets to match point.
why is Venus being found out so easily on big points?
she is choking....she is choking!
gosh! the thoughts of slamming Venus in a grandslam matchup is killing her right there again!
Didn't matter what Venus did, Vera was never going to be able to close her out.
Will Venus play doubles after all?
Her knee has been working her nerves since Wimbledon.
Our local guy reached the second round! This is the first ever open era grand slam tournament singles main board showing up and win for any Turkish tennis player :))
Of course Marsel Ilhan will not even know what hit him when he faces John Isner.
Good for Marsel Ilhan and Turkey! I love seeing new success like this.
Ditto, and thanks pompelmo for telling us about it; otherwise I never would have known the significance of Mr. Ilhan's win. I'd love to see him take his next match.
One of the things I like about tennis is these stories about new players -- so refreshing when it seems that the media cares not a whit about anyone out of the top 5.
Marsel Ilhan reaching the main draw ...

Helen, He is 22 years old and ranked 231. He can barely play the qualifiers from the waiting list. Winning 3 qualifying rounds was a big deal itself.
Behind the spotlights, real people enjoy their success :)
